Major Capital Equipment Programs

HMS DaringMajor capital equipment programmes usually require considerable effort and expertise to get them under way. Much has to be sorted out: Requirements, costings, trade-offs, conceptual and functional design, workshare, contracts, build strategy, design and construction programmes, often all against a backdrop of on-going change in the relevant industry. My principal experience of this phase of major programmes was as Programme Director on the Type 45 Destroyer programme in the late 1990s, where I brought initial structure to the ship design and build part of the programme at time of considerable upheaval in the industry and on the procurement itself. The eventual result is the successful construction on the Clyde of a class of six ships for the Royal Navy.
